400 IT MANAGERS EXPRESS THEIR OPINION ON SAN AND NAS
An exclusive survey of over 400 storage IT managers conducted by Peripheral Concepts, Inc. and Hattras, Inc. reveals that two out of three data centers with over one terabyte of disk storage capacity own a SAN, and this ratio will grow to three out of four by the end of 2003. The population with at least one NAS installed will grow from 38% to 60% in the same period. A significant percentage of the population own several SAN's, and they intend to move very progressively to consolidate them.
The slow economy has not durably affected the user's appetite for data and storage. Companies restrained their expenses and were forced to innovate to better utilize their disk capacity, but that does not seem to have had a permanent impact on the need and requirement to add SAN and NAS. In the past 18 months, disk capacity continued to grow but at a slower pace, and the move towards storage externalization is accelerating.
Storage networking is at a crossroad, with the two architectural models fighting for supremacy. Performance emerges as number one on the list of the most wanted features. Who buys SAN's and why, what do IT managers like and dislike, how do SAN buyers view NAS, why did some of them vote against buying NAS? These are the some of the questions that are answered. Among the issues keeping IT managers awake at night, backup and data protection come first, and they remain very high on the list of solutions or services they are willing to pay money for.
Product innovations and new interconnects, protocols and infrastructures attempt to either overcome the limitations of the present architectures or create new architectural models. Over one hundreds new hardware and software companies are competing for shares of that market. . IT managers are watching these moves with extreme caution. Do their solutions address the users' concerns? Are users perturbed by so many choices?
At a time when budgets are tight, and businesses are striving to improve their bottom line, a new policy for software licensing model introduced by Microsoft raised significant controversy. We interviewed a cross section of 100 end users from the telecommunications, financial, government, energy, and healthcare sectors to determine their specific needs when purchasing storage software. Our findings show that software enterprise licensing, subscription licensing, service, pricing and discounts, as well as understanding the overall purchasing process, were top priorities for customers.
Over 300 questions were asked. This extensive survey provides new insight into IT operations demographics for servers, hardware and software storage vendors, switch and hub products, as well as storage services, segmented by operation size. The result are analyzed in a report titled "Storage Networking- Market Analysis" to be issued in June 2002.
