Business Continuance and Disaster Recovery- A User's Perspective
Market Study

See Order Form at the bottom of this write-up

A population of over one thousand IT sites involving nine major industries was surveyed and questioned on their Business Continuance and Disaster Protection practices and plans.

This report provides statistics on practices, ranks issues and needs, indicates satisfaction ratings, and analyzes trends and plans.

The following parameters are analyzed for the entire population, and peculiarities pertaining to each of the major industries are highlighted

Servers and Operating System distribution

Disk and tape capacity

Applications and Database

RTO and RPO (Recovery Time and Point Objectives)

Mirroring and Replication- Local, Remote- Synchronous, asynchronous

Products used

Hot sites- Number, Distance

Cost per hour of downtime

Disaster Recovery practices

Product selection criteria

Vendor selection criteria

Major issues and problems

Major technologies rating

Objectives

The objectives that we set for this market analysis were to determine:

While these main objectives were achieved, we collected and analyzed several other statistics and demographics, such as storage growth and distribution, distribution of operating systems and servers, and software and library vendors.

Survey Methodology

To qualify for the survey, the respondent had to have at least half a terabyte of total disk capacity, and be responsible for backup, archive and/or disaster protection

Brief Summary

The survey targeted nine industries. In response to the recovery deficiencies exposed in the aftermath of the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks, the Finance, Telecommunication and Transportation industries have led the way in implementing reliable business continuance systems. Education, Health, and Retail Distribution are poised for major changes in the next two years.

While it is possible to build a new location from scratch, and restore data from backup tape, it is inconceivable today to 80% of the surveyed population, at least for the critical part of their data. The survey reveals that most large enterprises have a disaster recovery process in place. The share of company-owned disaster recovery sites will decrease in favor of recovery facilities located at a co-locator and operated by the enterprise.

Two metrics characterize disaster recovery plans: recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO). Most surveyed sites measure them in hours, some in minutes. Those obviously use mirroring and a protection solution that works in real time.

Among the major breakthroughs revolutionizing data protection implementations and plans are the extended use of Remote replication, the widespread deployment of SAN’s, and the increased utilization of Disk-to-Disk. Remote Replication is poised for significant growth in the next two years, along with an increase in the number of remote hot sites.

Slow recovery from system failure stands out as the most critical problem plaguing business continuity. Cost shows as a major concern to smaller organizations, and the cost of bandwidth remains the major impediment to implementing an optimal Data protection solution
