Continuous Data Protection (CDP)
Tighter legislations on data retention and recovery have contributed to elevating data protection to the top of the IT managers concerns. in 2005, 37% of the surveyed population ranked data protection highest among their storage management challenges. To these users, CDP comes as a savior. It is about to revolutionize the very notion of backup and recovery, and constitutes a major step towards achieving seamless business continuity.
Objectives of the Report
The report first establishes the user's major data protection problems, the actions planned to resolve them, and the budget dedicated to the various steps of his plan. It defines the different RTO and RPO required for various applications, and finds out what applications are better server by CDP and snapshots
CDP provides a continuum of recovery points for a given data set, offering the ability to access ANY point in time. It therefore provides infinitely granular recovery points (RPO) and some implementations can provide near instant recovery times (RTO). This study also determines the understanding and acceptance of the concept of CDP, the user requirements and complaints, and the eventual utilization of CDP for applications other than data protection, such as creating copies of production data for audits and other compliance related requirements, or data analytics and reporting
Survey Methodology
To qualify for the survey, the respondent had to be an IT administrator or manager with storage related responsibilities and one terabyte of total disk capacity most of which connected to open systems.
· We developed a questionnaire in collaboration with a number of industry executives · We tested the questionnaire in interviews with industry experts and storage vendors · We asked several thousands IT managers a limited set of questions to determine if they qualified for the survey. · We select about 200 of these screening survey respondents to complete the full survey. We targeted 70% of the population in the small and medium business category with the full survey respondents having mostly open systems and at least 2 SAN or NAS. · We send a detailed questionnaire of over 60 questions to the selected respondents · We target a minimum of 100 good responses. We compile and analyze the results, and compare with results obtained in our 2003, 2004 and 2005 surveys · We also include comments resulting from the many contacts we have throughout the year with IT managers.
