NAS and NAS Virtualization - A User's Perspective

2005 Market Study

See Order Form at the bottom of this write-up

A population of over two thousand IT sites involving ten major industries was surveyed and questioned on their storage configurations and plans.

For over 130 sites, this report provides statistics on practices for NAS and NAS virtualization, ranks issues and needs, and analyzes trends and acquisition intents.

The following parameters are analyzed by market revenue tier, and by industry

Objectives of The Report

NAS growth has outpaced most predictions. All major storage vendors offer a number of models, and tens of smaller new entrants compete for a portion of that multi-billion dollar market. Only a few years ago, NAS had to be defined. Today, sites with tens and even hundreds of NAS are common. It has become obvious that beyond 5 to 7 NAS, management presents a real problem. Managing tens or hundreds of discrete file systems dealing with additions, changes and migrations has proven be an impossible task.

By creating a single logical view across multiple NAS systems, NAS virtualization (or aggregation) addresses the scaling, performance, and management problems that plague NAS scalability today.

The primary objective of this study is to determine the acceptance of the various virtualization techniques, as well as user requirements and complaints. The analysis also provides valuable answers to questions such as:

  • How is the distribution evolving between NAS, SAN and direct attached storage
  • Are SAN and NAS storage consolidated into a single pool
  • What is the disk capacity growth rate of NAS relative to the overall capacity evolution
  • How do various industries react to this trend
  • What is the list of preferred vendors
  • What management services are of most value in association with a NAS virtualization offering

Survey Methodology

To qualify for the survey, the respondent had to be an IT administrator or manager with storage related responsibilities, have at least two NAS systems, and one terabyte of total disk capacity most of which connected to open systems.

  • We tested the questionnaire in telephone interviews
